TMC appplauds Supreme Court ruling on hijab By Shakirah Adunola 08 July 2022 | 2:43 am [FILES] A Muslim woman in Hijab The Muslim Congress has lauded the verdict of the Supreme Court of Nigeria approving the use of hijab in government-owned schools in Lagos State. The ruling ends a long-drawn legal battle over the constitutionality of the head-covering clothing for female Muslim students. The Supreme Court upheld the appellate court judgment, which had earlier set aside the decision of the High Court, Lagos State, banning female Muslim students from wearing hijab to school. The apex court deemed the ruling a violation of the fundamental rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, the dignity of human persons and freedom from discrimination. “Hijab has become the subject of fierce debate following the lawsuit filed by two 12-year-old girls of Atunrashe Junior High School, Surulere, Lagos, Asiyat AbdulKareem and Maryam Oyeniyi in 2014, under the aegis of the Lagos Area Unit of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), after they were barred from school for wearing hijab. The apex court ruling, which marks a hard-fought victory after eight years of legal proceedings, should serve as a landmark case on discrimination in public spaces and a boost for religious protection and freedom. “The court judgment underscores the need for guarantees of religious freedom to extend to the workplace, where discriminatory policies are often used in subjugating citizens, who choose to uphold their religious beliefs. The Federal Government must see this development as part of the effort to create a truly inclusive society where religion and culture are not just respected, but also protected. Authorities in public institutions, the leadership of organisations and business owners must brush up on the nuances of bias and do more to accommodate the diverse background of their workforce. The right of Muslim students and workers to worship must be respected, especially, the observance of the Friday (Jumat) prayers, at their appointed time. For all intents and purposes, this court verdict should impact how our diversity is accounted for. “We urge the Lagos State government to effect the judgment without delay and ensure full compliance by school authorities in the state. The teachers who take sadistic pleasure in tormenting female Muslim students, for daring to appear modest, must be treated with the full force of the law to serve as a deterrent to many who are wont to flout the rule in contemptuous disregard for the court verdict. We also urge Muslims never to cower in the face of any intimidating attempt to abuse their Allah-given rights.” The Muslim Congress also congratulated the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos Area Unit in particular, and by extension, the Nigerian Muslim community “for their courage and determination; the parents of the students for their stoical attitude to outface the uphill struggle, for without the unwavering collective resolve to take the long walk, this victory might have just been a mirage. “We, therefore, commend the tenacity of the pro-Hijab legal team, led by Alh Gani Adetola-Kazeem of blessed memory, who signed and filed the brief of argument a few weeks before his death. History will forever be kind to the late legal icon for this great feat. We pray to Allah to overlook his failings, have mercy on him and grant him the best of place in Paradise. We salute the bravery and astuteness of the legal team and also acknowledge the contributions of all who played a part in achieving this glorious triumph. May Allah honour them all in this world and the after-life. Though the three airlines were not mentioned, the Vice-President of AON, Mr. Allen Onyema, confirmed that the fuel price has now hit an all-time high of N714 per litre. Diesel may soon hit N1,500 per litre, marketers raise alarm Aviation fuel: We’re yet to feel impacts of FG’s intervention — Airline operators Daily Trust reports that several interventions by the Federal Government and the National Assembly have failed to resolve the crisis as the price of Jet A1 continues to skyrocket. In his presentation at the ongoing Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) National Aviation Conference (FNAC) in Abuja, Onyema said while the aviation fuel crisis is not limited to Nigeria, it was made worse by the naira to dollar exchange. He disclosed that in order to address the challenge, the Federal Government had approved 10,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel to the airlines but said the carriers were yet to access it. He noted that 16 months ago, the price of aviation fuel was about N200 per litre but has risen to over N700 per litre today in the local market. He said: “That is why we ran to the government and the Federal Government has given us about 10,000 metric tonnes of fuel at the cost of N580 per litre in Lagos and about N607 per litre outside Lagos. “This is not the only issue. Since the COVID-19 crisis, most airlines all over the world, including Nigeria have not recovered from COVID-19, except those whose countries have injected so much funds to assist them. This is nobody’s fault. It just happened. The government has tried its best by giving us this aviation fuel. This aviation fuel can take airlines out, not only in Nigeria but everywhere in the world. “Some airlines outside Nigeria have closed down because of the effects of rising aviation fuel. If these things are not addressed in Nigeria, it can affect the bottom-line of all airlines in Nigeria. “We have come to realise that there is little or nothing the committee set up can do because this is as a result of foreign exchange and the price of oil all over the world now. The fuel marketers will sell according to what they are paying. The cost of aviation fuel has increased, even

The Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA) gave the hint during a press briefing in Abuja. Prices of fuel, bread jerked inflation to 17.71 percent in May Wole Soyinka’s brother, Femi, dies at 85 According to the association, the cost of diesel will hit the roof if nothing drastic is done to curtail the current challenge faced by importers of the deregulated commodity. The National President, NOGASA, Bennett Korie, said, “If you go round now you will see that about 75% of filling stations in Nigeria have gone out of business. There is no diesel to take fuel to their stations. All of them are going down. “And it is not that the fuel is not there, but the cost of bringing it to the stations is too high. We know that the crisis between Ukraine and Russia has contributed badly, but the government has to do something fast, otherwise we are going to buy diesel in the next two weeks at N1000 to N1500/litre.” He added that this was also the reason why petrol scarcity had failed to abate in Abuja and neighbouring Nasarawa and Niger states, among others. “As far as I am concerned, nothing for now. The only way out, if you want to know, is that they (the government) should increase the price of fuel a little to reduce the money spent on PMS subsidy. “I know Nigerians will not be happy to hear this, but this is the only solution. They should increase the price of fuel a little so that the savings will enable the Central Bank of Nigeria to have enough foreign exchange. “You and I know that we import everything now in Nigeria. Diesel is an imported product and it is fully deregulated. So the importers are not getting dollars at the official CBN rate to import diesel. Everybody is going to the black market to get dollars to import their products and so you expect the price of diesel to be high,” he added. According to Korie, if the government could bring down the rate at which it spends foreign exchange on PMS imports, this would help other businessmen who import diesel to bring in products at low prices. He said, “The price is N850/litre and you are giving your driver 1,200 litres from Lagos to Abuja, if you do the calculation you will find out that the landing cost (for transporting the fuel) is about N40/litre. “So if you add that to PMS, buying at the depot price and selling here, it is too high. So if your cost of bringing it in is at N40/litre and you bought it at N155/litre, when you add this you will get N195/litre. But you are to sell at N165/litre. So who will do that kind of business? It is already a loss-making business.” Daily Trust reports that diesel price has increased by over 300 per cent and currently fluctuates between N700 and N800. Dear Reader,

The APC national leader and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, emerged the party’s presidential candidate at the end of the exercise. 2023: Tinubu, Atiku set for epic battle FACT CHECK: Did Asiwaju Tinubu have a hand in making Buhari president? Full Text: The 29 seconds video captured Atiku, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, Yobe State Governor, Maimala Buni, Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari and Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru among others. The video was captioned “THE GAME JUST GET STARTED.” The text further read, “APC Northern Governors and Senate President went to visit Alhaji Atiku Abubakar immediately after their APC Presidential Primaries this morning when Tinubu was declared the winner of APC Presidential Ticket “Northern blood brothers remain, Northern blood brothers, thes people might handover a life snake to Tinubu. There are two things they are going to do to make sure the north retains power, they are either going to start decamping to PDP or remain in APC and work against Tinubu’s interest. North and power are cousins. You don’t trust them when it comes to that.” Verification However Checks by Daily Trust revealed that the video was first taken in January this year during a condolence visit. Using Invid, a video verification tool, Daily Trust established that the video first surfaced on the Internet on January 22, 2022, when Atiku paid a condolence visit to the family of Dahiru Mangal, a business magnate in Katsina who lost his 85-year-old mother. The late Hajiya Murja Bara’u was the mother of Alhaji Dahiru Mangal who is the Chairman of Afdin Group, owners of Max Air, Afdin Petroleum, Afdin Construction, among others. Also Daily Trust traced a tweet by the former vice president on his Twitter handle @atiku where he confirmed the condolence visit on the same day. The tweet read, “Earlier today (January 22), I paid a condolence visit to Alhaji Dahiru Mangal in Katsina over the loss of his beloved mother and matriarch of their family, Hajiya Murja Bara’u. I pray that Almighty Allah will comfort the family and grant her Aljannah Firdaus in Paradise.” Conclusion The video currently in circulation is an old video from a condolence visit by Atiku and some northern APC governors to the family of Alhaji Dahiru Mangal and the video is being recycled. As such, the claim in the video that northern governors met with Atiku after Tinubu’s victory at the APC primary is false and misleading. This fact check is done in collaboration with the Center for Democracy and Development.
